27th Character Design
In order to better understand the stylistic elements of the latin alphabet and the basic pillars of typography I created a “27th Character” that could seamlessly fit into the existing structure of the alphabet.
The ideation process was crucial to this project. I needed a design that would not seem out of place in an established system of type. I sketched out over 120 different concepts for this project, experimenting with angles, weight and stroke. After deciding on 20 I was most pleased with, I evaluated each on their aesthetic appeal, ease of writing, and versitility. After settling on my final design I translated it into two different preexisting typefaces; Century Gothic, and Madre Script.
