The Wanderer's Guide To Bayrite
Self-Published Zine
A 16-page limited run zine, The Wanderer's Guide is story and worldbuilding woven together. It contains the notes and journal entries of a travelling academic named Mizath, as they chronicle the people, places, and monsters they encounter in a dangerous fantasy realm.
Goal
To better understand the concepts involving document design and printing, I self-published a small zine, which I sold on a personal use webstore for over a year, and ultimately raised over $800 for the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation.
Project Statement
I began by outlining project specifications, settling on a 16 sided booklet printed at 5"×7". Using these guides I wrote out the copy, and determined the order in which information would be presented to the audience. A black and white colour scheme was chosen to give the zine a clean aesthetic, while supporting the hand drawn style and reducing printing costs. LEAFY by Ieva Mezule was chosen for the primary typeface to bring a human touch to the work, reinforcing the idea of the book having belonged to a previous owner. I then created over a half-dozen original illustrations to support the written content, as well as designing a number of maps to aid in the reader's immersion.
I knew a strong advertising campaign would be crucial to the zine's success, and reached out to a number of local content creators, after explaining the concept I worked with them to create a number of posts to generate interest in the product, which helped the zine launch to greater sales.

The inner cover carries a large negative space where each zine was individually signed, while the first page introduces the reader to the book's narrator, and establishes a structure for the pages to come.

Located next to the name of each province is a small map of the kingdom, with the mentioned provice coloured white. Typeface changes were used to provide the reader with small asides, while black sections acted as containers for new subjects.
